Skunk Odor Remover

a.k.a. Dog De-skunker
a.a.k.a. Dog De-skunker of Science

Beau got skunked this year. Again. He has not yet learned the skunks are NOT little black and white kitties to chase. The wild kitties don’t run up trees like his kitties.

So, without further ado:

  • 1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 T. liquid dish soap

Wet your dog (if you’re me, remember to NOT bring the dog in the house first!). Mix all ingredients in a large plastic bowl. Thouroughly coat your dog with the mix. Let the solution sit on your dog for at least 5 min, be very careful to keep the goo out of his eyes. Rinse completely. Repeat as necessary.

This one WORKS. The soap breaks down the oils in the skunk stink, and the baking soda & peroxide neutralize the odor.

(insert cool Bill Nye “It’s SCIENCE!!” right here:_____).

Update 08/10/08: Mythbusters confirmed this home remedy for de-skunking. Check it out here. What I found interesting is that, on the show, they decided the commercial de-stinker doesn’t work as well as this home remedy. I have also attempted commercial stuff for cleaning dogs and have come to the same conclusion.
